A Note From Jason: Why I’m Asking For Your Support
Greetings umpire friends!
By supporting me on Patreon, you help fund the content I create and share with you, and you become an active participant in building Umpire Inspire as we celebrate, motivate, and inspire baseball and softball umpires around the world. As a contributor, you receive early access to podcast episodes, community involvement opportunities, UI merchandise, and the pride of fueling an effort that matters to you.
As I write this, Umpire Inspire is in its infancy. We’ve barely completed our plate meeting—we have a long day of work ahead and we’re not quite sure exactly what the game has in store for us! For now, The Umpire Inspire Podcast rolls on at full speed, bringing you encouraging, entertaining and INSPIRING conversations with umpires at every level of play. But make no mistake, in addition to the podcast your humble host has exciting plans for the future. Here’s a tease—and this is just between me and you, okay?—but Umpire Inspire Grants will launch in 2021… outreach opportunities around the country are beginning to take shape… and preliminary plans are in motion for an in-person event with Umpire Inspire fans like you—something that you just might not want to miss!
Does all this sound like an effort you can get behind and support? I hope so. It sure is for me, and I would love for you to join me on this journey!
Umpire Inspire is for umpires who think their jobs are about more than just calling balls and strikes. Support of UI through Patreon is for fans who want to do more than just listen to the show—they want to be a part of building Umpire Inspire and advancing its mission. The Umpire Inspire Podcast will always be free to listen to, and anyone who is unable to contribute financially will not notice a change. But if you’ve enjoyed the show so far and would like to contribute to Umpire Inspire’s future, I hope you’ll consider becoming a patron. Being a financial supporter for any amount of time, and for any amount, is a great help.
The Umpire Inspire Podcast is free for you to listen to… but not free for me to create. The show has been actually remarkably inexpensive to invent and continue to produce. I feel I’ve done a darn fine job of bootstrapping this thing into existence (and it has been so much fun to do so!). My startup costs were modest, especially as compared to the RIDICULOUSLY DISPROPORTIONATE amount of joy and personal satisfaction I’ve received as the show has reached thousands of umpires’ ears all around the world! Nevertheless, expenses do add up—web hosting fees and maintenance, gear purchases and upgrades, promotional expenses, yes there are even office supplies and other incidental costs necessary to keep this little project running and moving forward.
But the biggest “cost,” of course, is TIME. It’s no great secret—every hour I spend creating Umpire Inspire for you is an hour I spend away from my full-time job. Just like how we need to balance professionalism and fun while we’re on the field, I need to do the same with this little labor-of-love effort. Contributions from Patreon supporters will allow me to devote more time to the show as I slowly but surely pivot away from my regular 9 to 5… eventually, perhaps, making Umpire Inspire something that I do close to full-time! Nothing would make me happier than if I were to be able to make this act of service to umpires around the world my full-time pursuit. Less time chasing a paycheck = more time building this community that I believe in so very much.
I am very confident in choosing this patron-based support model instead of a paid advertising model. You see, Umpire Inspire is for YOU. And it’s also BY you—working umpires, and those who support them, are the engine behind this effort. I’m not at all interested in squeezing the max amount of money from some anonymous number of followers, or in accumulating X number of likes to attract a corporate sponsor. My desire for Umpire Inspire is a much deeper and more authentic connection with the people who matter the most—the good men and women who pursue our craft, our passion. The entire Umpire Inspire effort will rise or fall with YOU. In exchange for your generous monthly support, I get the freedom to do my very best work for the umpire community that I believe in so much.
As I close, a quick word about the $100-per-month Hall of Famer Tier of support. “Why, that seems like an unreasonable amount of monthly support to ask for,” you may be thinking to yourself. And you know, I couldn’t agree more. But here’s the thing—I know umpires. I know the core generosity that I see over, and over, and over again. I know the passion with which umpires eagerly share what they’ve learned with the next generation, and the strong motivation umpires have to pass along their strength and wisdom, in whatever form that takes. Umpires are, in my experience, a very special group of people. I have a sense that some who have been fortunate, who have been blessed, who are extremely passionate about inspiring umpires in their own neighborhood and around the world, will want to get behind Umpire Inspire and move the needle with unreasonable generosity. I want to honor that extraordinary sense of service and giving. I obviously thank those supporters very much and promise EVERY supporter my very best effort to live up to and multiply their demonstration of faith in Umpire Inspire.
So finally… thank you. Being an umpire means an awful lot to a lot of people, so if you’re the kind of person for whom all this resonates, if the mission of Umpire Inspire aligns with yourmotivations for being an umpire, I hope you will support our efforts. For me, umpiring is an act of service to the players, coaches, fans and to the game itself. Umpire Inspire is my act of service to my umpire brothers and sisters—and I’m going to give it everything I’ve got. Let’s do this!!
